Spotlight at Crafty Cardmakers

It's time for another Crafty Cardmakers spotlight, and this time we're challenging you to use water. That's right, water! That can mean watercolours, spritzing, splashing ... whatever. We're sponsored by the Handy Hippo who're offering a £10 voucher to the lucky winner!
I chose to make a background with ink spritzed with water. I rubbed some Kalaidascope ink (blossom) onto a non-stick sheet, added a little Glimmer Mist and then water, mixed it a little with the handle of a paintbrush, then 'smooshed' some card in the result. I added a little more ink and water, then repeated the process, getting a paler result the second time. I stamped a flower from the Victoria and Albert Museum Quilts series in four toning shades of Versacolor ink onto the paler background. I finished the card with some floral lace (not much of it - it's too precious to use lots! In other words, I love it too much,) and some pink gauzy material I've had for several years. (It began life as a tie for a bouquet of flowers!)

Hope you can join us this time.

I'd like to enter this card into the following challenges:

Crafty Catz where they want flowers,
Allsorts where they want something recycled (the pink gauzy material)
Totally Gorjuss where their theme is 'As YOU like it',
Moving Along with the times where the theme is 'Spring' (spring flowers)
Top Tip Tuesday where they want flowers.

One Stitch at a Time Challenge 47 (Post 2)

This is my second OSAAT post of the day - scroll down for a Hope Jacare image!

I was also lucky enough to be able to work with one of our Sponsor's images from Make it Crafty - a pretty background called 'Petals and Palings'. I teamed it with an image from Robyn's Fetish called 'Daisy Days', printed the combination on watercolour paper and coloured with Aquamarkers. I was lucky enough to win these last year, but I've neglected them! I added some extra colour depth with Twinkling H2Os, but reverted to my Promarkers for the skin tones. The flowers are Prima, shaded with Twinkling H2Os.
The paper is one I made myself, using the basic bloom shape from the Robyn's Fetish stamp.

I hope you're inspired to join us this week.

I'd like to enter this card into the following challenges:

Top Tip Tuesday who also want to see flowers
Paper Minutes who want to see flowers
Moving Along with the Times whose theme is 'Spring'
Do You Stack Up whose theme is 'patterned paper'

One Stitch at a Time Challenge 47 (Post 1)

This week on One Stitch at a Time, we're sponsored by Make it Crafty who are offering a prize to the lucky winner. The challlenge this time is to be inspired by this photo, or if that doesn't work, go for a good luck wish.
And this week, we're spotlighting one of the artists at Stitchy Stamps - Hope Jacare whose image 'Art Nouveau Vase 2' I used this week.
I love this style of image. I've had no formal training in anything artistic and really don't know much about artists and designers, but I've always loved this style. Hope Jacare has several images in this range, so if you share my love, go and check them out!

It's coloured with Promarkers, and I inked the background with Versacolor ink. The backing paper is my own, using colours close to those in the image. The border uses a Spellbinders Borderability die, and I've finished it with some sticky gems coloured with Promarkers to match.

I'd like to enter this card into the following challenges:
Everybody Art Challenge who'd like to see 'Our Favourite Thing' - this is my favourite design style.

Kaboodle Doodles who want us to 'Bling it Up' (I think that row of gems qualifies!)
Paper Minutes who want to see flowers
Crafts and Me who want 'monochrome'
Crafty Sentiments who want our favourite things. (Mine are Mackintosh-style images, promarkers and sparkly gems!)
Do You Stack Up who want patterned paper.
Some Odd Girl who want scallops

Peaches and Cyans

So, two cards in one day!
This time it's a Ching Chou Kuik image from Sweet Pea Stamps, and again it's coloured with Promarkers and highlighted with Sakura Stardust pen. The paper is from Papermania, and I've used a Martha Stewart border punch and coloured some sticky gems with Promarker to match.

I'd like to enter this card into the following challenges:
Sketch Saturday,
Stamp, Scrap and Doodle Saturday who want punches (the border punch)
Kaboodle Doodles who want us to 'Bling it Up'
Crafty Emma who wants 'Bold and Bright'
Totally Gorjuss where the theme is 'As YOU like it'

Lavender and Lace

It's always the same at this time of year. I've got to my box of made cards, taken what I need for the next few week's worth of birthdays, and I'm running out! It's the inevitable consequence of spending several months at the end of last year concentrating on Christmas cards. So, I took a look at some challenges for inspiration, and set to work.
The image is a Molly Harrison one from Crafts and Me, and she's been coloured with Promarkers and highlighted with Sakura Stardust pens. (You can't see that well in the photo - but I've given her wings a slight pattern, and glittered the stars and moons on her dress as well as giving the yellow parts of the flowers a bit of glitz.) The backing paper is from Personal Impressions, the lace from Hobbycraft and the flowers are from Prima (coloured with Promarker) and the local pound shop. The two types of fern were punched using my lovely new punches which arrived this morning.

I'd like to enter this card into the following challenges:
I Love Promarkers whose theme is 'Lavender and Lace'
Stamp, Scrap and Doodle Saturday who have set a punchy challenge this time,
Magical Monday who're looking for flowers

Paper Minutes who want flowers
Lil Red Wagon who want lace

Blue/Brown Card for Stamp with Fun

So, trawling through a list of challenges the other day, one jumped out at me - the 'Blue/Brown' challenge at Stamp with Fun. One of my favourite colour combinations is blue/orange, and, while this is similar, it seems to be a bit harder, so I decided to have a go.

I've used another of those Art Deco stamps from Cardcraft UK. I've coloured with Promarkers, although I did do the corner scrolls with a fineliner - they're just too narrow for Promarkers. The backing paper is from Papermania, I think, and the flowers are from Wild Orchid Crafts. The lace has a bit of shimmer which I rather like!

I'd like to enter this card into the following challenges:
Lil Red Wagon where they want lace,
Stamp with Fun where they want blue and brown

Art Deco

I've seen some Art Deco stamps by Card Craft UK a few times and been tempted, but hadn't bought them. Then, I spotted them reduced online, and decided I'd waited long enough. This weekend, I've coloured up two images, and this is one of the results.

I watercoloured the image. (I'm getting braver!) I used watercolour pencils for the skin and hair tones, and my Twinkling H20s for the rest. I made the three flowers which are painted to match the image, and finished it off  with some punched leaves and a swirl.

I'd like to enter this card into the following challenge:
Let's Ink it Up where the theme is 'anything goes'

And the other one.
Very different in that this one is coloured with Promarkers. Some flowers made by me, the rest by Wild Orchid Crafts or obtained from the local pound shop.

I'd like to enter this card into the following challenge:
The Crafty Pad where they want 'Girly'.

Hope you're all having a great weekend. I'm going to get back to learning to crochet!

One Stitch at a Time Challenge 46

The challenge at One Stitch at a Time this week is ... as you like it! Anything goes! We're sponsored this week by Kenny K Downloads and many of the team have used his images, so take a look around to see what he's got on offer!

We're also spotlighting one of the Stitchy Bear artists - this week it's the turn of someone who's fairly new to the shop - Kelley's Kids. She does a range of different image types, so there's bound to be something to your taste. I went for one of the cuties. She's called Betty Button, and she was such fun to colour. Look at those feet!

She's coloured with Promarkers, and I've mounted the image using my nesties. The border was cut with a Spellbinders border die, and I finished it off with some flowers which are part of a piece of lace I fell in love with last year in Hobbycraft. (Horribly expensive, but gorgeous!)

I'd like to enter this card into the following challenges:
My Grafico where 'Anything Goes'
Karber Weekly where they're looking for ribbon,
Pear Tree Designs where 'Anything Goes'
I Love Promarkers where they want us to 'Keep it Sweet and Simple'
Penny's Paper-Crafty Challenge where 'Anything Goes'
Digi Doodles Shop's Best where 'Anything Goes'
Stamp Something where they want us to 'Stamp Something Cute' - I think Betty qualifies!

One Stitch at a Time Challenge 45

The theme at One Stitch at a Time this week is 'New' or 'New Beginnings', and this week I was given the choice of the whole Stitchy Bear shop. (Can you imagine how long that choice took me?) But with that theme, one image soon became the obvious choice - Snowdrop Heart by Hope Jacare. Well, nothing says 'new beginnings' to me more than snowdrops - a promise of spring when it still seems some way off.

And I decided to make more than just a card! I got some printable Shrink Plastic from Crafty Computer Paper just before Christmas, and I set up a file to print various sizes of the image. Then, I coloured each image with Promakers and a little added Sakura Stardust pen. The Promarkers were quite hard to use on the plastic because it has such low absorbancy, and it was almost impossible to get an even result, so I decided to make the most of that, adding a stippled effect on top of the base layer of colour. Then, cut out, punched and shrank the various bits and made up a key ring and a bracelet.

The card image was printed on white card, and again coloured with Promarkers. The backing paper was made using a small copy of the image which I coloured digitally and then tiled. The card was finished with some ribbon and a couple of butterflies.

The thing I love about digital stamps is the way you can resize so easily. To make the things above with a rubber stamp I would've needed four different sizes of stamp, or would have needed to scan and resize the image - something which would probably infringe the copyright of the image.

Hope you can join us this week. We're sponsored by Joanna Sheen!

And, don't forget, if you add our Birthday Bash logo to your sidebar and enter the challenge, you'll be eligible for a draw to win some free images! See OSAAT for more details.

I'd like to enter these into the following challenges:
Pollycraft Monday Challenge whose theme is 'New Things'. (The shrink plastic and digi-stamp are new to me.)

Another Male Card

This is my second post for the day. If you're looking for my Crafty Cardmakers DT card, please scroll down.

Well, yesterday, I showed you a card I made for a colleague, but I've got two sons not too different in age from him, and one of them has a birthday coming up. He started university in October, and is living the student life. I'm not sure how I feel about that - I mean, it's great he's enjoying himself, but he's never been very good at getting enough work done! But then, it's a mother's job to worry.

Anyway, another male card, and I used the same stamp set.
As usual, I've coloured with Promarkers, and the papers are from Personaly Expressions. I've actually tried to reproduce one of the strange t-shirts he's taken to wearing - this one has one of those little jumping toys on it!

I'd like to enter this card into the following challenges:
Crafty Your Days Away whose theme this week is open,
Charisma Cards who're celebrating their 2nd birthday and want birthday themed cards.

Crafty Cardmakers Challenge 36

For the first Crafty Cardmakers challenge of 2011, we'd like you to make a card with red and a die cut. A nice easy challenge to start off the year.

And this week we're sponsored by One Stop Card Crafts.

Typically, when faced with a challenge like that, I take it literally, and so I produced this:

I had to photograph it at an odd angle because the alternative is to have a perfect image of me holding a camera reflected back! I've used my new Spellbinders Lotus Pendant die set which I bought after winning a prize in a recent Fred she Said blog hop - the prize was a $25 gift voucher! I've simply layered various die cuts from the set onto mirri-board. I must admit, I love this style of card - it's got lovely, clean lines and I think these cards are perfect to have in your stash because they work for any occasion and for men as well as women.

I hope you can join us this time!

I'd like to enter this card into the following challenges:
Craft Your Days Away which has an open theme this week,
Southern Girls who have an open theme this week,
Papertake Weekly who have an open theme this week,
Tuesday Throwdown whose theme is embossing. (All the die cuts were cut and embossed in my Wizard.)
The Creative Cottage who want us to use something new. (Pendant die set.)

Cards for Men

This is my second post for today, so for my OSAAT DT card, please scroll down.

I hate making cards for men. Well, maybe I don't hate doing it, but I find it terribly uninspiring, and I never seem to have embellishments to hand that'll work. I make all the cards for the birthday club at school, and up till now, that's been easy as it's been all women. Then, in September, a young man joined the staff, and it's his birthday in a few weeks.

Fortunately, I spotted a stamp set in the Hobbycraft sale - one of the Papermania Man's World sets, and I came up with this.

That's my first attempt at a darker skintone too. Thank goodness for Promarkers! I normally base my skin tones on my own (because it's always at hand!) And believe me, I'm the sort of pale that Billy Connolly claims is only white when it's tanned. The underlying shade is more blue! Fortunately, there isn't a lot of skin to colour in this image!

I did find some embellishments in the sales, and thought I had the ideal one for this card. I thought it was a rugby ball (and he's a rugby player) but I was informed by my son that it's an American football, so I might as well bin that, as I can't imagine it'll ever get used. Instead, I coloured and cut out a couple of the bottles from the same stamp sheet, as well as a sentiment, and teamed it with some magazine freebie paper I've had for ages.

I'd like to enter this card into the following challenges:
Craft Your Passion which has an 'anything goes' theme,
Creative Inspirations who want us to use something new (stamp set)
Fab 'n' Funky where 'anything goes'.

One Stitch at a Time Chalenge 44

The theme on One Stitch at a Time this week is love! And that's the theme of the special Freebie available from the Stitchy Bear shop if you spend $10 during January.

And this month we're sponsored by Digis with Attitude
and One Stop Cards and Crafts

Each member of the DT has been given one of the images/paper packs from the collaboration to preview, and my image is by Hope Jacare and it's called 'My Heart Keeps Growing'. I actually turned it on its side, and added some text.

I coloured the image with Promarkers with added gold Glamour Dust, then took the frame elements of the image and coloured them digitally then combined them to make a backing paper. I love the swirls that Hope Jacare uses - and this seemed a great way of including more of them! Finally, having spotted that the double heart motif looks a lot like a pair of lips (to me at least), I coloured and cut out a second pair to finish the card.

Hope you can join us this week.

I'd like to enter this card into the following challenges: Papertake Weekly where it's 'Anything Goes', and

Wags 'n' Whiskers where the want valentines,
Crafting Journey where they want digital (it's all digital!)
Catch the Bug where Anything Goes
Craft Your Days Away where Anything Goes
Delicious Doodles where they want you to use something new (The stamp is new)
Stamp Something where they're having a 'digi day' (it's all digital)
Rainbow Lady's where they want something new (the stamp)
Southern Girls where anything goes

An Engagement Card

It's been a busy few days. School started again on Wednesday, and then on Thursday, we had the Presentation of Certificates and Prizes for our younger son and daughter - two different events on the same day. At four, it was the turn of the GCSE pupils from last year, while at the evening event at seven, the A level certificates were presented.

So, I haven't done a lot of crafting, although, I did make one card. A friend and colleague announced her engagement on Wednesday, so I spent some time making a card for her. Unfortunately, I forgot to photograph it before I took it into school, so the only photo I have of it is from my phone so the quality is poor.
I did all the origination in Web Editor, then printed and assembled it. So you can see it a little better, here's a jpg of the board itself.
I probably could have done it in Photoshop Elements, but it's so much easier in Web Canvas because it's a vector package. I'd love to know if there's an up to date equivalent of it because when my laptop finally dies I doubt the software will be compatible with the newer operating systems. One of these days, I'll have to do some research, but I've been spoiled with this one because it was bundled with some other software which was very reasonably priced.

Other than some layering, I've kept the card fairly simple - they're both Scrabble players, so it seemed appropriate.

I'd like to enter this card into the following challenges:

AI Factory whose theme is 'new beginnings',
Quirky Crafts whose theme is 'new beginnings',
Ellephantastic whose theme is also 'new beginnings'.

By the Seaside!

First, I'd like to wish you all a very happy 2011. I hope you had a fantastic festive season, and that the return to work wasn't/isn't too traumatic! I go back tomorrow, and I know I'll miss the time at home.

I got some lovely unmounted stamps for Christmas, and I'll be using the rest of them soon, although it has to be said that with a strong fairy/mermaid theme to them, they're not terribly suited for cards for men. So, when I popped into Hobbycraft and found some of their mounted stamps very reduced, I had a good look through them and found this gem.
It was actually one of the smaller stamps they had, and it's bigger than I've shown here as I've cut it off at the side to make the result square. The image is coloured with Promarkers and then mounted and framed. I've used one of my Christmas presents - a Martha Stewart border punch - on some Co'ordinations Whitewash card that I've embossed and sanded and finished it with some sticky gems.
I'd like to enter this card into th following challenges:
Papertake Weekly where anything goes,
Lothian Crafts where anything goes,
Tuesday Throwdown where they're looking for embossing (co-ordinations border)
Paper Sundaes where they're looking for something new (stamp)

Favourite Project of 2010

The Stampman Challenge blog is having a blog hop, challenge and award event to mark the new year. As part of that, they want you to go through your projects of 2010 and choose a favourite. That's hard!

2010 has been in interesting year for me. Although I had a blog before last year, it's only in 2010 that I first got involved with a lot of things - entering a lot more challenges and joining a couple of design teams. I've also been lucky - winning a few 'top x' results and a number of prizes from blog hops and challenge blogs.

I've also tried a lot of different techniques with varying levels of success. So, what to choose? I enjoyed a couple of largely digital projects I've done here and here and done a fair bit of rubber stamping including this one, but if I'm honest, the technique of the year has to be colouring with Promarkers. I started late in 2009, but from basic beginnings, my technique has improved, although I've still got a lot to learn. So, if I'm choosing a favourite project, I'm going to choose my most recent one.
I've chosen it because I just had so much fun colouring that sky. It's a challenge I doubt I'd have attempted a year ago, but now, blending such different colours doesn't terrify me any more. So, I'm going to award myself the Stampman Award - it's down with my other awards, at the bottom of the blog posts.

So, what's your favourite project of 2010? I'm looking forward to seeing it.
